A pre-World War II classic, the 1941 Plymouth Special Deluxe Convertible appeared on sales floors before the government halted automobile production.

Produced prior to the United States’ entry into World War II, the 1941 Plymouth Special Deluxe Convertible is an impressive example of 1940s automotive technology. A real slice of Americana, this two-door convertible also is the kind of car that one would see parked outside a malt shop or at a drive-in movie.

1941 Plymouth Special Deluxe Convertible: Heart-Shaped Grilles and “Speedline Fenders”

As the Auto Editors of Consumer Guide points out, the 1941 Plymouth Special Deluxe Convertible has a grille that resembles a heart, much like the ones that appear on Valentine’s Day cards. This convertible also features rounded “Speedline” fenders and a “Wingtip” bumper with a “Superguard” in the middle. After just one look, it’s clear that the exterior styling on this two-door coupe makes the Special Deluxe Convertible a head-turning kind of car.

1941 Plymouth Special Deluxe Convertible: Additional Features

Plymouth included the following special features in the 1941 Special Deluxe Convertible:

Oil-bath Air Cleaner: As the name indicates, a pool of oil captures dust, bugs and other unwanted bits and pieces that get sucked into the air intake.

Safety Rim Wheels: In the event of a blowout, the safety rim wheels hold the tire in place to help drivers maintain control until they can pull over to the side of the road.

Alligator-style Hood: Like the jaws of an alligator, the front hood of the 1941 Plymouth Special Deluxe opens wide to allow easier access to the engine.

Under-the-Hood Battery: Plymouth relocated the battery from under the driver’s seat to a place under the hood of the 1941 Special Deluxe.

($) Powermatic Shift: A Vacuum-assisted transmission was available for an extra $6.50.

($) Chrome Wheel Trim Rings : This stylish accessory was available at an extra cost.

1941 Plymouth Special Deluxe Convertible: A Pre-War Classic

Approximately one year after the 1941 Plymouth Special Deluxe made its debut, the United States entered World War II , which put a temporary hold on automobile production. Instead of cars, America focused on creating tanks, planes and battleships. That’s one reason why this 1941 Plymouth still is a special car to collectors. Restored Special Deluxes have been priced for sale at approximately $60,000.
